The boys won the first game of the day fairly easily. The second game proved more challenging. They were down 2-3 at the half. It was an intense first half, and the score could have just as easily have been 3-2 in they're favor. Thanks to some research last night, we knew the other team had some ex-college players who had also played on city leagues. They told us after the game that at the half, our boys had them scared.
The flannel boys came out hard the second half, hoping to wear the opponents down. Unfortunately, their aggressive play wasn't enough to keep the other team from scoring two goals in about 45 seconds. Those two goals gave the other team a 3 point lead, which really demoralized the flannel. They tried to rally for a comeback but ended up giving up several more goals instead. It was hard to watch. One of the major problems was that our team only had one guy who is used to playing defense. All of the rest are normally offense. That, combined with the fact that the other team averaged about 1 foot taller and 50 pounds heavier than our team, and constantly floated a player down by the goal (Cherry picker!) made it extremely hard for the boys to get anything done.
So the boys were rather glum. They perked up quite a bit, though, when a DJ from KFAN (the major sports radio network in the Twin Cities) came up and did an interview with them after the game. Apparently the plaid flannel really grabs the attention of the media. The boys have been interviewed, videotaped, and photographed for several different media outlets, both local and national. The U.S. Pond Hockey Association also seems to love them, and has pictures of them plastered all over the website. So it is kind of cool.
